Frequently Asked Questions – Oxford Annexation

What areas have been annexed?

You can find a map on this website  (see links above). If you have further questions, call the Oxford Planning office, 232 – 2305.

So what’s going to change?

You are now in the city limits of Oxford, have all the rights of Oxford citizenship, and are subject to all the laws of the city ordinance book.

Do I need to register to vote in Oxford?

If you are already registered to vote in Lafayette County and have been annexed, then you automatically will be qualified to vote in the City. If you are not registered to vote, you may do that at the Circuit Clerk’s office at the Lafayette County courthouse.

What city laws are different from what I am accustomed to, and where can I find out more about them?

There are numerous ordinances in the City Code book. The city is presently recodifying the code book, a process that should be through this summer or fall. When it is through it will be online via this website. Until then, you would have to ask to see a copy here at City Hall or at the Lafayette County Oxford Library.

Do I have to walk my dog on a leash?

The City ordinance says that “no dog shall be allowed to run at large…”

Who do I call for an emergency?

The Oxford Police Department and Oxford Fire Department numbers are on this website.

When will my garbage be picked up and how much does it cost?

The city will assume solid waste collection for all annexed areas beginning April 30th.  A schedule will be posted later explaining what days pick ups will be in which areas. The sanitation fee is $16.00 a month, and includes twice weekly pick up. Oxford Solid Waste will also pick up rubbish left at the curb or streetside.

Who is my alderman?

The ward map is on this website, and your alderman is identified by your ward number. Dr. William C. Baker is the alderman at large. If you have questions or concerns, you are welcome to call your alderman, the alderman-at-large, the mayor, who works full time at City Hall, or the department that is best suited to address your concern.

How much will my taxes be?

The Oxford general fund millage is 27.27, which means your taxes for the current year would have been $273 per $100,000 property valuation. (If your house is appraised at $150,000, your city taxes would have been $409.50.) If you would like to know what your taxes would have been for this year, you may call the City Clerk’s office.

What about school taxes?

School districts and school taxes are unchanged by annexation.

What else might change for me, financially?

If you are now on Oxford water and sewer, your bill will decrease by an average 21%. Due to better fire protection, your home insurance premiums may go down as well, and you likely will want to contact your insurance agent to notify them of your change.

Who should I contact with more questions?

You may call your alderman, and you’re welcome to call the mayor’s office. Most Oxford citizens call the department that will know the answer to your question and be able to respond to your needs. All department phone numbers are on this website, and you are welcome to ask questions by email, too.
