Initiatives by the City and Resources for Residents


Objective:
To promote sustainable efforts and environmentally responsible projects within the City of Oxford.  The goal of these efforts and projects is to protect and enhance Oxford's high quality of life for current and future generations.
 
The City seeks to lead by using credible, practical methods in its planning and operation including areas like recycling, energy expenditure, water usage, storm water collection, responsible & efficient building construction, and reducing pollution. 

Citizens and visitors are encouraged to use the resources listed here in helping keep Oxford green.

Green
defined - Just what does "being green" or "going green" mean?  Generally, when you hear the phrase "going green", it refers to acting in a responsible, sustainable manner in regards to natural resources and the environment.   Water & soil conservation, recycling, purchasing and using environmentally friendly products are typical, practical examples of being green.

Current City sustainable projects & activities:
  • TVA Energy Audit  (Oxford Electric Department)
    - City Hall audit completed
    - OPD, OED underway
  • Taking advantage of natural lighting
  • Check electric space heaters
  • Turn off extra lights
  • Recycle all cans, paper, and cardboard
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs
  • Do not let city vehicles idle for extended periods
  • Unplug all chargers (phone, camera, etc.) when not in use
  • Check bathrooms for leaky faucets
  • Order environmentally friendly office supplies & cleaners
  • Turn off computers, printers, copiers when not in use
  • Check doors and windows for air leaks
  • Use paper wisely
