Phase I of this project is to create the "backbone" portion: a continuous path from Molly Barr Road south to Thacker Mountain.  Preliminary engineering is underway with bidding scheduled to take place in the fall of 2005.  The initial phase of this project will create a pathway along McElroy Drive to Molly Barr Road.  The new pathway will then run from Molly Barr Road along the old railroad bed to Gertrude Ford Boulevard, and then onto Old Taylor Road.  (There are already bike lanes along Molly Barr Road.)  A special bridge crossing Highway 6 will be constructed to connect the north and south portions of Old Taylor Road . The pathway will then head along the TVA power line areas west where the paved portion will end.  Heading southwest to Thacker Mountain will be an unpaved trail that includes fitness stations along the path.  The Hwy 6 bridge and Park Drive segments shown on the map will not be undertaken at this time.
Phase I Update:
The Pathways project Phase I is currently under construction.

Miles of two-way paved bike paths in Phase I:  3.2 miles
Miles of two-way unpaved bike paths in Phase I:  2.7 miles

Phase II (see funding approval above) of this project includes the following:

  1. Completion the Core loop from Molly Barr Road to Old Taylor Road and from N. Lamar Blvd. to Sisk Ave.

  2. A pedestrian/bikeway bridge over Hwy. 6

  3. A pocket park between Jackson Ave and City Pool

  4. Bike lanes from Jackson Avenue to new bridges on College Hill Road

  5. Bike lanes on Old Sardis Road (Hwy 314) from McElroy Dr. to state maint.

  6. Bike lanes on Sisk Avenue from Bramlett to Oxford Commons

  7. Bike lanes on S 18th to Belk Dr

  8. Bike lanes on Hathorn Road from Coliseum Drive to Intramural Road

  9. Bike lanes Belk Drive from S. Lamar to S. 18th

  10. Lighting for pathway (on the northern portion of converted rail bed)

  11. BMX and Dirt Jumping facilities and walking trails at new Oxford - Lafayette Sportsplex

Miles of paved bike lanes and routes (in phase 2): 8.5 miles.

The pathways project
has been enabled by a combination of support from the Mississippi Department of Transportation,  the Oxford Mayor and Board of Aldermen, Congressman Roger Wicker, and the people of the City of Oxford.
